Part II • Building the Genetic Case: From Genealogy to Arrest

  1. Once investigators had narrowed down suspects through genetics and genealogy, their next big objective was confirming a match to the crime scene DNA. The genealogical work had led them to Kohberger, but forensic confirmatory evidence would seal the case.
  2. Investigators monitored Kohberger ahead of arrest. Officers observed him placing trash bags into a neighbor’s bin—these were retrieved for genetic analysis. They also noted his efforts to meticulously clean his car, behavior that investigators logged as suspicious.
  3. Forensic testing confirmed the presence of Kohberger’s DNA on the knife sheath, matching the crime scene profile. This confirmation elevated the quality of the evidence from genealogical suspicion to forensic certainty.
  4. Additional DNA evidence included a three-person mixture of unknown DNA found under a victim’s fingernails. Kohberger’s defense attempted to preemptively challenge the admissibility of this and other DNA findings as prejudicial, but the court provisionally allowed its inclusion
  5. Kohberger’s defense team also filed motions aiming to suppress evidence tied to IGG—arguing it violated his constitutional rights. But in February 2025, Judge Steven Hippler ruled against suppressing the genetic evidence, affirming that IGG was lawful and not inherently unconstitutional
  6. Throughout pretrial hearings, prosecutors emphasized that Kohberger had no expectation of privacy for DNA left at the crime scene. They maintained that IGG had simply provided a lead, and that subsequent forensic evidence merited his arrest
  7. At the same time, Kohberger’s cell phone data, Amazon purchase history, and surveillance footage began to paint a digital picture of his movements and possible intent. Prosecutors argued these layers of evidence created a strong circumstantial case
  8. Defense counsel continued to explore motions related to search warrant affidavits, alleging misrepresentation of facts to judges and selective omission. But these procedural challenges did not stop the case from moving forward toward trial
  9. The combination of genealogical leads, forensic confirmation, and digital analytics formed a compelling, multi-dimensional case. Investigative genetic genealogy had laid the groundwork; traditional forensic methods provided closure
  10. This phase exemplified the seamless synergy of genealogy and forensic science: genealogical tools pointed investigators in the right direction, and confirmed DNA evidence ensured accountability through due process.
