Collating Source Images

SmallPDF is a free online resource that will let you take multiple images (.jpg or .png) or multiple document files (.doc, .pdf, .xls, or .ppt) and combine them into one PDF. A great use for this might be a multi-page/image probate document, or when your family spans the bottom of one census page and the top of the next?

Did you know…

In Irish tithe applotment books (which exist for various dates between 1823 and 1837), “& Co.” and “& partners” are terms that refer to a group of tenants who farm common land, rather than a business arrangement.

The Tithe Applotment Books record the occupiers of tithe-eligible land, not householders. They are not population censuses.

Because the tithe was payable only by those who worked on agricultural land, you may not find your ancestors included.

German Emigration Records

Germany required that citizens emigrating from the country had to file for permission. These “Permission To Emigrate Records” are often available in local state archives in Germany.

You can visit the Archive Portal-Dto search for the state archive from where your family emigrated. You can then search that archive’s site for the possible emigration records. Be aware that some sites may not be available in English so you may need to use a tool likeGoogle Translateto navigate the site and conduct your search. Each archive will have different requirements and costs for ordering copies of the records.
